Dans en theater

Brief history

The tradition most likely dates back to Roman times, to ancient Emona (modern Ljubljana). By the end of 16th century, the country being dominated by the Habsburg monarchy (which was the first one to include all the Slovenian regions), the theatre was limited to the school theatre groups of  Jesuits who were besides Capuchins and especially Protestants, the pioneers of literature in the Slovenian language, extremely important for Slovenian cultural history. The productions were mainly held in German and Latin but also (as one of our evidence shows,  in 1657) in Slovene.

In 1721, Slovenians got the first Slovenian play, Skofjeloska procesija (The procession of Skofja Loka) by the Capuchin Romuald (Lovrenc Marusic) and in 1789, when a comedy Zupanova Micka (The Mayor’s Micka) was produced, the first true playwright, Anton Tomaz Linhart.

The first theatre was built in 1765 but stayed for a long time an almost exclusive privilege of German and Italian artists. In 1867, first Dramaticno drustvo – the Dramatic Society (the most important person was Fran Levstik) and finally, in 1892, the national theatre was founded in Ljubljana (the first director became Ignacij Borstnik). Till 1914, Slovenian theatre performances were being held also in Trieste (where the theatre still exists although the city is part of Italy) and in Maribor, despite continuous problems mostly caused by national intolerance.

After World War I, when Slovenia became a part of The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians (and then of Yugoslavia itself in 1929), the Slovenian theatre was professionalized and started to keep pace with contemporary world trends. In the process of the so-called “Europeanisation of Slovenian theatre”, Slovenian theatre artists (namely Osip Sest, Milan Skrbinsek, Ciril Debevec, Bratko Kreft, Oton Zupancic, Josip Vidmar, Bojan Stupica...) – after long years of struggling for performances in their own language when they had to compete with German, Italian and Czech actors and directors – were determined to reach the level of contemporary European production and make the national theatre stand on an equal footing with others. They were influenced especially by the Burgtheater of Vienna and The Moscow Art Theatre; while the latter was important as regards new ideas in the art of acting and producing, the former was influential especially in promoting the established classics of repertory.

After World War II, Slovenia being one of the six republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the influence of the Soviet cultural politics on the Slovenian theatre was not very strong nor long lasting; the main reasons were the specific political situation and especially the Slovenian theatrical tradition rooted in the idea of the “Europeanisation” mentioned above. Many new theatres were established over the country (in Ljubljana, Kranj, Celje, Nova Gorica, Ptuj), including professional puppet theatres in Ljubljana and Maribor. On the other hand, experimental and alternative  theatrical groups flourished (e.g., Oder 57 – Stage 57, Gledalisce Glej – Glej Theatre...), which have played an essential part in Slovenian theatrical life. Let us name some of the most important theatre directors (Slavko Jan, Bojan Stupica, Mile Korun, Dusan Jovanovic, ...), dramaturgs and art directors (Lojze Filipic, Bojan Stih, Dusan Moravec, Marko Slodnjak...) playwrights (Primoz Kozak, Dominik Smole, Gregor Strnisa, Andrej Hieng, Peter Bozic...) and actors (Marija Vera, Stane Sever, Milena Zupancic, Radko Polic, Polde Bibic ...) who have been active after World War II.
One of the main characteristics of the Slovenian theatre after World War II was a lively cultural communication between the republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which diminished after the independence of Slovenia in 1991.
From the eighties onwards, there has been a strong influence of the so-called physical theatre on the Slovenian theatre (on independent theatre groups in particular).

Current situation

Today, there are more than 100 productions a year (produced by 11 professional, public theatres), about 40 projects by independent professionals, not to mention amateur performances (there exist approximately 170 groups producing drama, 190 groups dealing with puppet art and 25 dance groups); having a population just under two million, Slovenian attendance of theatre productions is approaching 900,000 every year.
Besides professional theatre institutions all over Slovenia, other cultural institutions (one of the most important is without any doubt Cankarjev dom Ljubljana which acts also as (co)producer of alternative theatre performances) have organised theatre programmes, which consist of original and guest productions. There is also a considerable amount of national and international festivals organised by Slovenian institutions. On the other hand, Slovenian theatre artists do a lot of visiting productions abroad; many of them won awards at recognised theatre festivals.
The productions of public theatres (among them, The Slovenian National Theatres in Ljubljana and Maribor are the most important) are usually based on texts, from world to Slovenian classics (let us mention Ivan Cankar, Slavko Grum, Dominik Smole, Gregor Strnisa...) as well as on plays written by contemporary writers (among Slovenians especially Drago Jancar, Vinko Möderndorfer, Matjaz Zupancic...); performances of independent  professional theatres can be described as physical theatre (e.g., Betontanc...), theatres of symbols (e.g., Koreodrama), street theatres (e.g. Gledalisce Ane Monró) etc.; productions of commercial theatres (e.g., Spas teater) are based on popular contemporary comedies; finally, various puppet productions are held all over Slovenia.
Among most prominent directors one can mention Meta Hocevar, Dusan Jovanovic, Tomaz Pandur, Eduard Miller, Janez Pipan, Damir Zlatar – Frey, Dragan Zivadinov, Vito Taufer, Katja Pegan, Emil Hrvatin, Matjaz Pograjc, Mateja Koleznik, Jernej Lorenci, Sebastijan Horvat, Tomi Janezic.

Akademija za gledalisce, radio, film in televizijo (The Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television) was founded after World War II. It provides studies (BA – university degree) and training for actors, directors, dramaturgs, scenographers, costumographers. There is no study programme for playwrights yet.

Classical dance

Brief History and Current Situation

The Slovenian ballet began with the school theatre groups of Jesuits in productions of which ballet parts were inserted. In 18th and 19th century there were many guest ballet and pantomime performances by Austrian, German, and Italian groups.
The first Slovenian pantomime ballet was Mozicek (Little Man) by Josip Ipavec (first performed in 1901 in Graz); in 1912, it was first produced by Slovenian actors-dancers in Ljubljana. In 1918, the ballet was made part of the Slovenian National Theatre Ljubljana; thus the first Slovenian professional ballet ensemble and the ballet school were established (artists were of Slovene, Czech, Russian nationality). In 1946, the second professional ballet ensemble began work in Maribor.
In Ljubljana, dancers and choreographers Pia and Pino Mlakar, Slovenia’s most famous ballet couple, led the ballet theatre for almost 15 years; their professionalism and cosmopolitism had an important influence on Slovenian ballet. Under their patronage, plenty of young choreographers developed (M. Jeras, M. Sevnikova, I. Otrin, V. Dedovic, H. Neubauer, M. Jeras), of whom later neoclassicist Henrik Neubauer and after him neoexpressionis Metod Jeras took the leading positions in the theatre, consolidating and artistically improving Slovenian ballet. Other important artists included V. Dedovic, J. Kosi, Ksenija Hribar... In Maribor, one of the most important characters was Iko Otrin, who enriched classical repertory with experimental and avantgarde pieces.
Among the productions (up to the year of 2000, almost 200 ballet premieres, full-length, medium-length and shorter works, have been put on), many original Slovenian ballets have been produced in Ljubljana and Maribor (up to 2000, 52 full- and medium.length ballets and 23 mini-performances accompanied by music composed by Slovenians).
Ballet dancers are educated at the Ballet Schools (Srednja baletna sola) in Ljubljana and Maribor.

Modern dance

Brief History and Current Situation
Slovenians first got in touch with modern dance at the end of the 19th century when  Bettina Ruffini performed a visiting production in Ljubljana. Later there were other performances of that kind as dancers Ritta Sachetti, Klavdija Margit, Valerija Kratina visited Slovenia.

In 1922, when Lidija Wisiakova performed, the choreographer being Valclav Vlcek, the Slovenian modern dance was born. In 1929, Meta Vidmar, a student of Mary Wigman, opened a school for modern dance. Other choreographers and dancers before World War II included Pia and Pino Mlakar, Katja Delak (who also established her own school), Marija Gradnik, Marta Paulin.
Meta Vidmar and Marta Paulin were active also after World War II; the former educated two influential Slovenian dancers, Lojzka Zerdin and Ziva Kraigher. Later, especially the activity of Jasna Knez and Ksenija Hribar, the first lady of Slovenian modern dance art,  were of great importance for Slovenian modern dance. In 1984, Ksenija Hribar and a group of dancers founded PTL (Ljubljana Dance Theatre), the first professional contemporary dance company in Slovenia.

Nowadays, Slovenian modern dance presents a vivid and active part of Slovenian cultural scene. Under the patronage of PTL, several choreographers with different aesthetic approaches operate (Tanja Zgonc, Sinja Ozbolt...). There are also a considerable amount of  independent groups of high artistic level and international reputation (Iztok Kovac and EN-KNAP, Matjaz Faric, Maja Delak, Branko Potocan...). On the other hand, many visiting performances are organised (one the most active institutions is Cankarjev dom Ljubljana, which annually brings 10-15 foreign productions to Ljubljana) which provide the Slovenian audience with information on the developments in contemporary dance.

Since 1999/2000, contemporary dance is taught at the Child-Care Secondary and Grammar School of Ljubljana (Srednja vzgojiteljska šola in gimnazija Ljubljana); although education in the contemporary dance has thus become part of the public school network,  Slovenia still lacks proper infrastructure to provide better working and training conditions for dancers and choreographers.

Slovenian cultural policy

Externe link www.culturelink.org/culpol/slovenia.html
The Slovenian state budget allocates public funds to support Slovenian theatre and dance productions. About 15% of the money available is spent on theatre; 90% of the amount is spent on public theatres (that is, about 90% of the revenue income; the remaining 10% is obtained from ticket sale, sponsorships etc.), 1,5% on independent theatre performances (the other important source for independent groups are municipal funds), 3% on theatre festivals, 5,5% on other expenses, such as tours, the maintenance of theatre buildings, theatre associations.
16.5 % of the state money available is spent on music and dance; 90% of this money  goes to public institutions (including the two “Slovenian National Theatres Opera and Ballet” in Ljubljana and Maribor), 10% is spent on other music and dance activities.

Cooperation with the Netherlands

The Mini Teater puppet theatre from Ljubljana in 2002 staged nine animal stories by Dutch writer Toon Tellegen. The author attended the premiere, where he also read several of other animal stories in Dutch, while Slovenian actors read the Slovenian translations.
Recent years have seen especially fruitful coperation in the field of contemporary dance. Emio Greco from the Netherlands performed in 2001 in Cankarjev dom with great success.
2003 will see a major presentation of Dutch mime theatre: “Touch of Dutch” festival between 24 and 31 March.
The festival is organised by Ops Productions, together with Cankarjev dom Cultural and Congress Centre, PTL - Ljubljana Dance Theatre, Puppet Theatre Ljubljana, and National Gallery.Performing groups: Stuffed Puppet Theatre, De Daders, De Groep van Steen, Suver Nuver, Hotel Modern, Bronkhorst & Friends, Rob List, Hans Hof Ensemble, Karina Holla.
The festival will be followed by a workshop under the guidance of Karina Holla (1-7 April, 2003).
